Themes of the future
Material reduction, recycling, reuse and substitution are investment areas with a future.
Today’s throw-away society is heading straight for a huge imbalance with its consumption of natural resources. With our “Circular Economy” thematic fund from Swisscanto, we focus on companies in the circular economy that offer an alternative. We want to make more out of your portfolio.
With our linear business practices – which continue to account for more than 90 percent of economic activities – there is an impending billion-dollar surplus in demand for natural resources. By 2030, this could exceed supply by 8 billion tonnes annually. The circular economy helps to correct this imbalance. It follows the motto “Reduce, Recycle, Reuse, Replace” to decouple economic growth and raw material consumption. It thus brings environmental, economic and social goals into harmony and is at the same time a growth driver with investment potential. In a 2015 study, consulting firm Accenture predicted that the transition from the linear to the circular economy could bring an increase in economic growth of 4.5 trillion dollars by 2030.
We invest in companies that we believe are operating successfully. We also take into account how they perform in terms of sustainability aspects. We focus on companies that are leaders in the transformation to a circular economy with their products or services and that encounter supply risks. We are confident that companies with a positive impact on a sustainability theme can offer greater growth prospects and return opportunities than the wider market.
When selecting stocks, we take into account fundamental data such as the return on invested capital (ROIC). Our objective is to invest in quality companies with a competitive business model, low debt, an attractive ESG profile and a positive return on invested capital.
